These are very busy. I appreciate the thoughtful use of the pathfinder to create the exclusions and the one without the textured background has the most potential. Perhaps try substituting shades of light grays instead of black. You can also try to create some air by using white letters to carve some larger spaces. (I’ll send a rough concept via email)
The upper right design also has an intriguing rectangular containment/ border element but is still a little too visually active.
If you want to play up the building of texture through smaller type elements check out the typography of David Carson.
I’d like see a variation of the final version with no strokes on the gray letters and maybe some alternate lighter values. Or maybe all of the stroked type deleted altogether (unless of course you need them for all 26 letters)
I think that just the black letters and vertical text forms might be interesting enough on their own.
